Full Hearts And Empty Bellies

It was only 80 years ago, but by our standards, Winifred Foley was brought up in unthinkable deprivation, with no gas, electricity or running water and never enough to eat. Her account of growing up in the Forest of Dean inspired the acclaimed TV drama Abide With Me and is being republished.
Here, in the first part of our captivating serialisation, she recalls how, despite the unremitting poverty, hers was the happiest of childhoods - warm, secure and filled with overwhelming love.
